Starkville Daily News and Daily Times Leader photographs, Special Collections Department, Mississippi State University Libraries.
The Daily Times Leader was established in West Point, Mississippi, in 1882 as the weekly Clay County Leader. Combined with the Times-Herald in 1928, it became the Daily Times Leader in 1935 with Edgar and Beulah Harris as editors. They subsequently became the publishers, and by 1960 the paper was edited and published by William Henry Harris.
The Starkville Daily News began as the weekly Starkville News, published in Starkville, Mississippi, in 1902, absorbing the East Mississippi Times in 1926. By 1947 the Starkville News was being published by Morris and Henry Meyer. In 1960 the weekly paper was replaced by a daily. By 1965 William Henry Harris was the publisher and Sherrill Nash the editor, and the paper was being printed in West Point.
The photographers identified include Virginia Nash, Leah Klotz, Hubert B. Scrivener, David Moulder, Carolyn Fulgham, and Harris.
The Starkville Daily News and Daily Times Leader photographs contains photographic prints and negatives, often accompanied by clippings from the respective newspaper, which document the people and events covered by the Starkville Daily News and Daily News Leader in Oktibbeha County and Clay County, Mississippi, and beyond between 1960 and 1975. The eleven folders include photographs of people from colleges and schools, official meetings, community events, political campaigns, sporting and social events. The prints were either developed from negatives taken by newspaper reporters or supplied to the newspaper. The negatives include some of the original 35mm but are predominantly those produced by the newspapers for printing.
Series 1 includes photographic materials from the Starkville Daily News. Folders 1 and 2 contain many photographs taken at Wood Junior College, Mathiston, Mississippi, between 1960 and 1964. Folders 4-8 feature photographs taken in 1971, mostly in Starkville.
Series 2 contains photographs which were mainly featured in the Women’s Page of the Daily Times Leader, edited by Carolyn Fulgham. Folders 9-11 include a large number of photographs of high school seniors from West Point at graduation parties in 1974 and 1975.
