The object is a Civil War-era Confederate patriotic envelope. Its recto features an image of a flag with the seal of Maryland placed above a poem that has an anti-Union sentiment. The envelope is cream in color and is printed in blue ink. Its verso features what appears to be staining from adhesive.


recto, on flag: CRESCITE ET MULTIPLICAMINI recto, below flag: "Maryland, Maryland ! / Stainless in story ; / True in heart - true in hand - / Cling to thy glory ! / Spurn the invader forth, / Tell the usurping North, / That when two hearts are wroth, / Union must sever!"
