Description

The hand-colored lithograph depicts a scene from the Battle of Buena Vista, where Henry Clay, Jr. - the son of Henry Clay - was shot and killed. Clay lies on the ground with his sword in his proper right hand. Five soldiers surround Clay as he dies while a sixth stands in the background with his gun raised. The lithograph features hues of blue, red, white, gold, and gray. It is printed on off-white paper.

Recto, below image: DEATH OF COL. CLAY, / BATTLE OF BUENA VISTA, FEB. 23D. 1847. / When shot down a second time he drew a brace of pistols from his belt, handed them to Capt. Cutter, and requested him to deliver them to his father, with this message: "Say to him that he gave them to me, and that I have don / all that I can withthem and now return them to him".
