Description

This black and white illustration is of Edwin McMasters Stanton, an American lawyer and politician who served as Secretary of War under the Lincoln Administration during most of the American Civil War. Stanton is depicted as seated in an ornate chair beside a table and wearing a dark suite and eyeglasses. Stanton has an ink pen in one hand and a page of paper in the other hand. A heavy curtain is depicted as behind him and a bunch of papers are on the table. Stanton's signature is depicted below the illustration. This illustration is from volume five of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
