Description

This is a black and white illustration of Ulysses S. Grant, Commanding General who led the Union Army to victory in the American Civil War in 1865 and served as the 18th president of the United States from 1869 to 1877. Grant is depicted as wearing a dark military uniform and standing with his right hand in his pocket and his left hand holding the edge of his coat. His coat has shoulder boards on each shoulder and is unbuttoned to reveal a dark, buttoned vest. Grant's signature is depicted beneath the illustration. This illustration is from volume five of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
