Frank and Virginia Williams
This black and white illustration is of General J. C. Pemberton, a career United States Army officer who fought in the Seminole Wars and with distinction during the Mexican–American War. He resigned his commission to serve as a Confederate lieutenant-general during the American Civil War. Pemberton is depicted as wearing a dark suit and tie with a white shirt. Pemberton's name is captioned beneath the illustration. This illustration is from volume seven, of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
