Frank and Virginia Williams
This black and white illustration is of Joseph Hooker, an American Civil War general for the Union, chiefly remembered for his decisive defeat by Confederate General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863. Hooker is depicted as standing, wearing a dark, double-breasted military uniform with shoulder boards with stars. Hooker has an arm wrapped around his sword and one hand resting on the shaft of the sword. His name is captioned below the illustration. This illustration is from volume seven, of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
