Frank and Virginia Williams
This black and white illustration is of Ethan A. Hitchcock, a career United States Army officer and author who had War Department assignments in Washington, D.C., during the American Civil War, in which he served as a major general. Hitchcock is depicted in a dark, double-breasted military uniform with a high collar and star studded shoulder boards. The engraver's name, A. H. Ritchie, is named along the bottom edge of the illustration and Hitchcock's name is captioned below. This illustration is from volume seven, of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
