This sepia toned photograph is of Ulysses S. Grant, Commanding General, who led the Union Army to victory in the American Civil War in 1865 and thereafter briefly served as Secretary of War who served as the 18th president of the United States from 1869 to 1877. Grant is pictured in a suit and tied with a white shirt. The photograph was found tipped into pages 282-283 in volume seven of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
