This black and white illustration is a scene from the siege of Vicksburg. The image depicts two levels of soldiers in military uniforms with rifles and other weapons. A flag is set within a mound of dirt and two cannons are visible on the left side of the illustration. Some buildings and trees can be seen in the distance at the tops of the hills. "Siege of Vicksburg from the original Painting by Chappel in the possession of the publishers" is captioned below the illustration. This illustration is from volume seven, of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
