Frank and Virginia Williams
This black and white illustration is of Winfield Scott Hancock, a Union general in the American Civil War and the Democratic nominee for President of the United States in 1880. Hancock is depicted as standing next to a tree wearing a broad rimmed uniform hat and a dark, double-breasted military uniform with shoulder boards. His right hand is braced against the tree and he is leaning on the handle of his sword. Two flags and some bushes are depicted behind Hancock. This illustration is from volume seven, of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
