Description

This black and white illustration is of James Samuel Wadsworth, a philanthropist, politician, and a Union general in the American Civil War who was mortally wounded in battle during the Battle of the Wilderness of 1864. Wadsworth is depicted as standing beside a light colored horse and wearing a dark, double-breasted military uniform, white gloves, a light colored tasseled sash, an a sword. His hat is depicted in his left hand and he is holding the reigns of the horse with his right hand. Wadsworth's signature is depicted below the illustration and "From the original painting by Chappel in the possession of the publishers" is captioned beneath the signature. The publisher is listed beneath the caption. This illustration is from volume seven, of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
