Frank and Virginia Williams
This black and white illustration is of General Andrew Jackson "A. J." Smith, a United States Army general during the American Civil War, most noted for his victory over Confederate General Stephen D. Lee at the Battle of Tupelo, Mississippi, on July 14, 1864. Smith is depicted wearing a dark, double-breasted military uniform with shoulder boards. Smith's name is captioned below the illustration. The illustration is in volume eight of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
