Description

This black and white illustration is of John Bright, a British Radical and Liberal statesman, one of the greatest orators of his generation and a promoter of free trade policies. Bright is depicted seated in a dark chair and wearing a dark suit, vest and tie with a white shirt. "Entered according to act of Congress A.D. 1870 by Johnson Fry and co. in the clerks office of the district court of the southern district of New York" is along the bottom edge of the illustration. Bright's signature is depicted beneath and "From the original painting by Chappel in the possession of the publishers." is captioned below. The illustration is from volume eight of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
