Description

This black and white illustration is a map of Union and Confederate placement during the Battle of the Wilderness on May 5, 1864, the first battle of Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant's 1864 Virginia Overland Campaign against General Robert E. Lee and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. The map title is simply "The Wilderness may 5th, 1864" and includes a key that explains indications for Union and Confederate works. The caption beneath the map states, "Note: For the most part the troops are indicated by divisions; when a name designates a brigade it is enclosed in parentheses." The illustration is on page 365 from volume eight of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
