Description

This black and white illustration is of Ulysses S. Grant, an American Commanding General who led the Union Army to victory in the American Civil War in 1865 and politician who served as the 18th president of the United States from 1869 to 1877. Grant is depicted seated and holding an envelope in one hand and wearing a dark suit, vest, and tie with a white shirt. A cloth, a column, and a building is depicted behind him. "Entered According to act at Congress A. D. 1869 by Johnson, Fry and Co. in the Clerks office of the district court for the Southern district of N. Y." is along the bottom edge of the illustration. Grant's signature is depicted below the illustration and "From the original painting by Chappel in the possession of the publishers" is on the bottom edge of the page. The illustration is from volume nine of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
