Description

This black and white illustration is of Joseph Wheeler, a cavalry general in the Confederate States Army in the 1860s during the American Civil War, and then a general in the United States Army during both the Spanish-American and Philippine–American Wars near the turn of the twentieth century. Wheeler is depicted standing with one arm propped on a ledge and wearing a gray, double-breasted military uniform with ornate collar tabs and ornate stitching on the sleeves of the uniform coat. The artist, Charles B. Hall, is named along the bottom edge of the illustration and Wheeler's signature is depicted beneath. The illustration is from volume nine of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
