Six pages of original court documents from the State v. Powell case dating 1860. The case was heard in the State of Mississippi Lowndes County Circuit Court.


The State of Mississippi, Lowndes County, charged A. J. Powell with default. Powell was summoned to give evidence in the trial F. A. Faulkner for unlawfully trading with slaves in 1859. Faulkner traded with an enslaved man named Levin, belonging to Rufus Watson. Specifically, Faulkner sold calico, handkerchiefs, a pocket knife, tobacco, a pair of shoes, and other articles of merchandise. When Powell failed to appear in court for Faulkner's trial in 1860, he was fined $100.
