Description

Thirty-two pages of original court documents from the State v. Phill case dating 1839. The case was heard in the State of Mississippi Lowndes County Circuit Court.

Transcription

The State of Mississippi, Lowndes County, charged an enslaved person named Phill, sometimes called Bill, with murder. Phill was accused of murdering another enslaved man named Bartley on April 1, 1838 with an axe. Both enslaved persons were owned by John Perkins. Several other enslaved persons, also owned by Perkins, were summoned to testify. Jenny, wife of Bartley, was summoned. Enslaved persons summoned as material witnesses on behalf of the defendant were Dan, Randall, Mary, and Louisa.
