Description

This color postcard features a large naval ship moving in the water. The ship has two visible funnels/stacks in the middle and two lattice/ cage masts on either side of the funnels. A United States flag flies near the mast on the stern end of the ship. People are visible on the deck of the bow. The back of the postcard identifies the item as a postcard and provides publisher information as well as indication for address and postage stamp placement. The description in the upper right reads "217837--U. S. Battleship Illinois. Displacement, about 12,200 tons; speed, 17 knots; 11,000 H. P. Length, 374 ft.; beam, 72 1-6ft.; draught, 23 1/2 ft. Crew of 693 men. Carries four 13 in. guns, fourteen 6 in. guns and eight smaller guns. Armor belt, 16 1/2--14 ins. amidship; 14 ins. on turrets. Completed 1901. Cost $4,750,000. Additional cost of refitting, $667,000.
