Frank and Virginia Williams
This is an illustration of Franklin Pierce, the 14th president of the United States serving from 1853 to 1857, a northern Democrat who believed that the abolitionist movement was a fundamental threat to the unity of the nation. Pierce is depicted seated, wearing a dark suit, vest, and tie with his left hand tucked inside his vest. The caption beneath the illustration reads "Franklin Pierce". The illustration appears in volume one of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
