Frank and Virginia Williams
This black and white illustration is of William Tecumseh Sherman, a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War (1861–1865), achieving recognition for his command of military strategy as well as criticism for the harshness of the scorched-earth policies that he implemented against the Confederate States. Sherman is depicted wearing a military uniform with epaulettes on the shoulders and a sash across the front. The engraver's name, H. H. Hall's Sons, is named along the bottom edge of the illustration and Sherman's signature is depicted below. The illustration is from volume nine of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
