Description

This black and white illustration is of Henry Ward Beecher, an American Congregationalist clergyman, social reformer, and speaker, known for his support of the abolition of slavery, his emphasis on God's love, and his 1875 adultery trial. Beecher is depicted in a headshot wearing a dark suit, vest, and tie with a white shirt. The artist's name, Kurtz, 1883, is along the left edge of the illustration and Beecher's signature is depicted below. The illustration is from volume nine of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
