This black and white illustration is of J. C. Frémont, an explorer of the Western United States, military officer, and politician. Frémont is depicted ad wearing a dark suit and tie with a white shirt. The illustration is set within and oval surrounded by finely detailed sketching. Frémont's signature is depicted beneath the illustration with the caption "The Explorer of the Rocky Mountains" beneath it. The illustration is within volume two of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
