Chase's signature is below the illustration with the caption "Likeness from a recent Photograph from life." The artists name, Alonzo Chappel, is printed on the right, directly beneath the illustration. The illustration is within volume two of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
