Description

This black and white illustration depicts Salmon P. Chase, an American politician and jurist who served as the sixth chief justice of the United States. Chase is depicted as seated at a desk with a pen in his hand. Chase is wearing a dark suit and tie and a white shirt. An ornate fireplace and mirror is depicted behind him. Chase's signature is below the illustration with the caption "Likeness from a recent Photograph from life." The artists name, Alonzo Chappel, is printed on the right, directly beneath the illustration. The illustration is within volume two of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
