Description
The medal's obverse design depicts the quarter-right profile of George Bancroft, an American statesman who promoted secondary education and founded the United States Naval Academy. The reverse design presents three scenes layered on top of one another. The first scene depicts pilgrims arriving in America. A ship, four men, and supplies are pictured. The second scene shows pilgrims interacting with Native Americans (on left) and possibly imagery of the American Revolutionary War (on right). The final scene depicts five statesmen surrounding a desk. One is seated while signing a document as the rest surround him.
