Description

The medal's obverse design features the left-side profile of James Russell Lowell, an American romantic poet. On the reverse, a scene from The Vision of Sir Launfal is depicted where the poem's principle character, a knight, is shown offering charity to a beggar. The knight is shown standing holding a bowl with outstretched arms and offering it to a figure seated underneath a tree. A horse stands eating grass just behind the knight, and a castle is pictured in the background.
