Description

The medal's obverse design features a portrait of Dred Scott, who unsuccessfully sued for his and his family's freedom in the in the Dred Scott v. Sandford case of 1857. Beneath the portrait, a man is shown being carried away by two soldiers. A woman appears to be dragged on the ground as she reaches for one of the soldier's arms. A child is pictured on the woman's back. On the reverse, Confederate and United States flags are pictured intersecting at the top of the medal. Several rifles appear behind the flags, and the image of an eagle is placed at the center of the intersection. At the medal's bottom, a decorative border lines the edge.
