The medal's obverse design depicts five soldiers. In the foreground, Stonewall Jackson is shown on his knees with his proper left hand grasping his proper right shoulder. A man stands at his proper left side, gesturing to the right. A third man runs toward the injured Stonewall. Two other soldiers are shown grasping rifles in the background.
