
Artifacts
The Frank and Virginia Williams Collection of Lincolniana consists of approximately 12,000 artifacts, statuary, prints, paintings, broadsides, ephemera, photographs, philately, collectibles/miniatures, and numismatics. Materials are housed in 20 map case drawers, 30 cartons, and a variety of loose statuary, prints, and paintings. The collection also includes nearly 100 original manuscripts and the Claude Simmons collection which consists of approximately 12 bankers boxes of Lincoln related materials and scrapbooks. There are also approximately 15,000 books, journals, and pamphlets separated into two collections: the Lincoln Book Collection and the Civil War/Collateral Book Collection.

The Last Offer of Reconciliation

Chromolithograph depicting an idealistic scene where the North and South reconcile after the Civil War. In the image, Abraham Lincoln is shown extending his hand to Jefferson Davis. Gideon Welles and Williams H. Seward are shown standing just behind Lincoln. Behind Davis stands Robert E. Lee, an enslaved person, and two unknown gentlemen. At the image's center, Liberty is seated in a small temple, which is adorned with the names of the U.S. states. Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman are shown adding the names of the seceded states to the temple. In the left-side background (Lincoln's side), a peaceful scene is depicted where a farmer plows his field. To the right (Davis's side), chaos and violence ensues. The border of the image also reflects the difference between the two sides. The left pictures prosperous olive branches and oak sprigs while the right features thorns. Four vignette images are featured at each side of the border: at the top an enslaved person is shown being whipped; at the right two soldiers are shown fighting; at the bottom a farm scene is depicted; and at the left a man is shown fishing.

The lithograph is one in a series of three Civil War satires featuring shadow figures. The first plate features six cartoons that cynically depict European intervention. The top image represents the anxiety toward European invasion during the Civil War. On the right, Queen Victoria is pictured surrounded by a lion, a bagpipe player, and a storm of demons. To the left, Columbia is shown with an American flag, eagle, and man wearing broken shackles. The second cartoon show Emperor Napoleon III of France with another officer standing before two portraits, one of an exiled Napoleon Bonaparte on the island of St. Helena and another of Emperor Frederick the Great leading his army.

In the plate's first image, male civilians and a soldier are pictured at a saloon. The plate also shows Jefferson Davis's body guards, who appear disorganized. The third image features soldiers chasing, killing, and roasting pigs. In the final image, a military caravan is shown fording a river.

The bottom two cartoons show a sentry and sergeant conversing and soldiers threatening a cow.
