Artifacts

The Frank and Virginia Williams Collection of Lincolniana consists of approximately 12,000 artifacts, statuary, prints, paintings, broadsides, ephemera, photographs, philately, collectibles/miniatures, and numismatics. Materials are housed in 20 map case drawers, 30 cartons, and a variety of loose statuary, prints, and paintings. The collection also includes nearly 100 original manuscripts and the Claude Simmons collection which consists of approximately 12 bankers boxes of Lincoln related materials and scrapbooks. There are also approximately 15,000 books, journals, and pamphlets separated into two collections: the Lincoln Book Collection and the Civil War/Collateral Book Collection.

    The copper etching depicts a black and white bust portrait of Abraham Lincoln from the chest up. Below the portrait, Jacques Reich's signature appears along with a note regarding the material used to complete the etching. The portrait was enclosed in brown wood frame, held together by clear packing tape, but was removed for preservation. A paper mat that was glued to the portrait was unable to be removed due to risk of damage to the item.

    An original piece of artwork depicting Abraham Lincoln, General Egbert Viele, Secretary of the Treasury Chase, and Secretary of War Stanton aboard the Miami. In the drawing, Lincoln is shown taking personal command of the Union troops during the Peninsular Campaign, 6 May 1862. The artist, Charles Stanley Reinhart, was commissioned to create the piece by Scribner's Monthly Magazine. It appeared alongside General Viele's recollections of the war and was published in the October 1878 edition of the magazine. The object is enclosed in a gold frame and cream mat.

    The medal's obverse design features a bust portrait of Mark Hopkins, an American educator and theologian. The reverse image alludes to an quotation attributed to President James A. Garfield where he defines the ideal college as ""Mark Hopkins on one end of a log and a student on the other."" The scene shows just this, Hopkins seated at one end of a log with a bound volume in his hands. The student is seated to Hopkins's proper left, also equipped with a book. A tree makes up the scene's background.

This item is probably a reproduction and originally appeared in Abraham Lincoln's stories and speeches : including early life stories, professional life stories, White House incidents, war reminiscences, etc.
