    This clipped signature of Abraham Lincoln is dated October 21, 1861. This is the first Lincoln signature purchased by Chief Justice Williams at a cost of $200.00. Clipped signatures, not really the best way of collecting autographs, now sell for $3,000.00.

    The object is a military commission pass dated 1865 and signed by Major General David Hunter, member of the committee that presided over the Lincoln assassination conspiracy trial. It is mounted in a folder with an engraved portrait of Hunter (4501 B). This item moved to Original Manuscripts Box 1 Folder 180.
