Description
The medal's obverse design features the right-side profile of Nathaniel Hawthorne, a nineteenth-century writer most famous for penning The Scarlet Letter. A quill and piece of paper also appear on the medal's obverse. On the reverse, several figures are pictured. On the left, a nude male sits on a short pillar playing a flute. A nude woman appears in a seated position just under the flute. Another man, dressed as a king, is pictured just above the flautist. At the center, a man and woman stand back-to-back on a rock (possibly Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale and Hester Prynne). To the right, three figures stand in a line and a wall runs at their fronts. Two ships sailing on water and a small village scene are also depicted.
