Description
The medal's obverse design depicts the left-side profile of Sylvanus Thayer, an early superintendent of the United States Military Academy at West Point. On the reverse, Thayer is shown standing with a book in his proper left hand. To his proper right, a table sits covered in books, papers, and a globe. Various symbols mathematical drawings illustrate various mathematical principles.
