This is a black and white illustration of Major Theodore Winthrop, a writer, lawyer, and world traveler who was one of the first Union officers killed in the American Civil War. The illustration only includes Winthrop's head and neck and is within a thin "frame." Winthrop's name is captioned below the illustration. This illustration is from volume four of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
