Description
This black and white illustration is of Benjamin Franklin Butler, an American major general of the Union Army, politician, lawyer and businessman from Massachusetts. Butler is depicted as seated next to a table and wearing a double breasted military uniform with shoulder boards on either shoulder. His sword is propped against his left leg and his left elbow is resting on the table beside him. Butler's signature is depicted beneath the illustration. This illustration is from volume five of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
