Description
This black and white illustration is of Charles Wilkes, an American naval officer, ship's captain, and explorer who commanded USS San Jacinto during the Trent Affair during the American Civil War (1861–1865) where he stopped a Royal Mail Ship and removed two Confederate diplomats, which almost led to war between the United States and England. Wilkes is depicted as wearing a dark military uniform with small shoulder boards on either shoulder, a white shirt and a dark tie. The photographer and engraver is named along the bottom edges of the illustration. Wilkes' signature is depicted beneath the illustration with the caption "Com. Charles Wilkes, U. S. N." is beneath the signature. This illustration is from volume five of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
