Description
This black and white illustration is of John Lorimer Worden, a U.S. Navy officer in the American Civil War, who took part in the Battle of Hampton Roads, the first-ever engagement between ironclad steamships at Hampton Roads, Virginia, on 9 March 1862. Worden is depicted with a long beard, wearing a dark, double-breasted military uniform with epaulettes on the shoulders, embroidery on the cuffs, and a belt. Worden is seated with the handle of a sword visible near his left hand. Worden's signature is depicted beneath the illustration. This illustration is from volume five of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
