This black and white illustration is of Samuel Cooper, the highest-ranking general officer in the Confederate States Army throughout the American Civil War, even outranking Robert E. Lee. Cooper is depicted as wearing a dark, double-breasted military uniform with a high collar that's lined with stars. The artist is listed along the bottom edge of the illustration with Cooper's signature depicted below. This illustration is in volume six of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
