Description
This black and white illustration is of William Starke Rosecrans, an American inventor, coal-oil company executive, diplomat, politician, and U.S. Army officer who gained fame for his role as a Union general during the American Civil War. Rosecrans is depicted as wearing a dark, double-breasted military uniform with a vest and white shirt underneath and shoulder boards on the shoulder. "Major-General W. S. Rosecrans" is captioned beneath the illustration. This illustration is from volume six of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
