Description
This black and white illustration is of Edmund Kirby Smith, a senior officer of the Confederate States Army who commanded the Trans-Mississippi Department (comprising Arkansas, Missouri, Texas, western Louisiana, Arizona Territory and the Indian Territory) from 1863 to 1865. Smith is depicted as wearing a dark, double-breasted military uniform with a high collar that is decorated with stars. Smith's signature is depicted beneath the illustration. This illustration is from volume seven, of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
