Description
This black and white illustration is of J. C. Pemberton, a career United States Army officer who resigned his commission to serve as a Confederate lieutenant-general during the American Civil War and was the commanding officer during the Confederate surrender at the Siege of Vicksburg. Pemberton is depicted wearing a dark, double-breasted military uniform with a high collar that's studded with stars. The etch artist, Charles B. Hall, is listed along the bottom edge of the illustration and Pemberton's signature is depicted beneath. This illustration is from volume seven, of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
