This black and white illustration is of General Frederick Steele, a career military officer in the United States Army, serving as a major general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Steele is depicted in a dark, double-breasted military uniform with star-studded shoulder boards. Steele's name is captioned beneath the illustration. The illustration is in volume eight of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
