Description
This black and white illustration is of General William Tecumseh (W. T.) Sherman, a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War (1861–1865), achieving recognition for his command of military strategy as well as criticism for the harshness of the scorched-earth policies that he implemented against the Confederate States. Sherman is depicted seated wearing a dark, double breasted military uniform with start-studded shoulder boards and a high collar. Sherman is holding a sword across his lap. The artist's name, Alonzo Chappel, is named along the bottom edge of the illustration and Sherman's signature is depicted below. The illustration is from volume eight of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
