Description
This black and white illustration is of William Ewart (W. E.) Gladstone, a British statesman and Liberal politician. In a career lasting over 60 years, he served for 12 years as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, spread over four non-consecutive terms (the most of any British prime minister) beginning in 1868 and ending in 1894. Gladstone is depicted seated, holding a book and wearing a dark suit, vest and tie with a white shirt. "Entered according to act of Congress A. D. 1871, by Johnson Fry and Co in the clerks office of the district court of the southern district of New York" is captioned along the bottom edge of the illustration and Gladstone's signature is depicted below. The illustration is from volume eight of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
