Description
This black and white illustration depicts William T. Sherman, a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War (1861–1865), achieving recognition for his command of military strategy as well as criticism for the harshness of the scorched-earth policies that he implemented against the Confederate States. Sherman is depicted wearing a dark, double-breasted military uniform with star-studded shoulder boards and a white shirt. Sheridan's signature is depicted below the illustration. The illustration is from volume nine of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
