This black and white illustration is a full length depiction of James Buchanan an American lawyer, diplomat and politician who served as the 15th president of the United States from 1857 to 1861. . Buchanan is depicted as wearing a dark suit with a white shirt while standing beside a table with one hand resting on a book that's resting on the table. The table is covered in a whit cloth and a chair can be seen behind Buchanan. Buchanan's signature is depicted beneath the illustration. The illustration is within volume two of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
