Description

This black and white illustration is of John Brown, an American abolitionist leader who was eventually captured and executed for a failed incitement of a slave rebellion at Harpers Ferry preceding the American Civil War. Brown is depicted as wearing a dark suit and vest with a white shirt while standing with his hands behind his back. Brown's name is captioned beneath the illustration. The illustration is within volume two of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
