He is depicted as wearing a dark suit, vest, and tie with a white shirt, standing out on a balcony near some pillars with the balcony rail behind him. Douglas's signature is depicted beneath the illustration. The illustration is set within and oval surrounded by finely detailed sketching. Frémont's signature is depicted beneath the illustration with the caption "The Explorer of the Rocky Mountains" beneath it. The illustration is within volume two of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.
