verso, at top center: THE LAST LIFE PORTRAIT OF LINCOLN. Secretary of the Navy Gideon / Welles commissioned Connecticut painter Matthew Wilson's portrait of / Abraham Lincoln. Wilson had photographs of the President made and / gained several sittings with the busy executive in February 1865. Lincoln's / close associates proclaimed the portrait an excellent likeness. Lincoln / himself, always modest about his physical appearance, declared the painting / "horridly like" its model. Welles paid Wilson $85 for the portrait on April 12, / 1865 - two days before Lincoln was shot. verso, at bottom left: Form 20586 5/83
